• Playgroud Equipment I

Self-initated project. In between the grey street canyons of Cologne’s quarter Braunsfeld lays a parking lot, used as a schoolyard of a small private bilingual primary school. The project started with an e-mail of the representative head oft the school directed to KISD – Köln International School of Design Design – seeking for help and innovative ideas to be realized on their »playground«. A group of three students, Elisabeth Fried, Anne Hegge and Lena Startseva was found and the »Self Initiated Project« began. Working in the area of ecology and design under the supervision of Prof. Günter Horntrich, we started on brainstorming ideas that would not only meet but overcome the costumers’ expectations. Trying to get rid of stereotypes, clichés, and gender-branded, supersaturated colours and trivialised forms and figures of pink princess swings and plastic-blue pirate boats, a series of nine concepts contradicting regular children’s toys has been developed. Focussing on low impact by using simple materials or upcycling scrap products, a variety of modular, mobile, long lasting and easy-to- manufacture playground equipment has been developed and realized. Starting from a scrap car to be transformed to an adventure playground; a giant-size set of house of cards inspired by Charles Eames to the transformation of an unused bike rack, we inserted imagination, sustainability, fantasy and life to a schoolyard playground without adding pink and baby blue colours.
